The first episode of Manito Média‘s documentary series Au Pays des Mitchifs aired on Canal D Saturday, April 22. The series consists of eight half-hour episodes and will air on Canal D every Saturday.
Au Pays des Mitchifs captures an entire year of hunting, trapping and fishing adventures, by the Metis of St. Laurent, Manitoba who have been perpetuating these activities since the birth of their Nation. The series is a rare glimpse into the heart of one of the most vibrant Metis communities in North America with 1,400 inhabitants. For the Metis, hunting, trapping and fishing are not only a pleasure but also a way to live and survive. For some, this still represents up to 50% of their grocery cart while for others it is their main source of income.
During the four seasons, the cameras were able to capture the expertise of these men and women who keep alive a heritage that dates back to the days when trappers from Nouvelle-France united with Indigenous women of the Red River to create the Metis Nation.
